PE at Forres Primary Academy

Physical Education is vital for the holistic development of children, supporting their physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth. The emphasis on physical activity, skill acquisition, and personal development ensures that children are not only physically fit but also sociable, confident, and resilient individuals. Within our curriculum, children are taught the significance of an active lifestyle and the impact of physical activity on both physical and mental well-being. Our curriculum encourages the children to develop lifelong habits of health and fitness.

How do we teach P.E.?

The EYFS curriculum introduces children to the fundamental principles of PE. The focus is on developing basic movement skills, coordination, and balance. Children engage in various activities that encompass running, jumping, throwing, and catching. As the children progress into the later stages of the year, the will use the taught fundamental skills to develop their learning into more structured lessons of dance, gymnastics and games.

When the children transition from EYFS into Key Stage 1, the curriculum becomes more structured building on their fundamental skills taught in EYFS. In KS1, the emphasis shifts towards refining these basic skills and applying them to structured team games and personal development within a sports.

In Key Stage 2, the curriculum further advances, allowing children to build on their previous experiences. The focus on skill development intensifies, with students undertaking more advanced techniques in a wider range of sports. They engage in activities such as athletics, hockey, netball, cricket, dance and swimming (UKS2). Encouragement is given to apply tactics and strategies, as children learn not only the mechanics of each sport but also the importance of cooperation and sportsmanship. Children in KS2 have the opportunity to participate in extra curricula clubs while also being invited to competitive against local school in a variety of sports.

How do we know our pupils are succeeding?

At Forres, we aim for our children to leave KS2 with the basic physical skill that can help them to lead healthy and happy lives in the future. We aim for the children to understand the correlation between physical activity and mental wellbeing. We aim for the children to have good knowledge of a range of sports as well as the importance of teamwork.
