History at Forres Primary Academy
Why we teach history?
At Forres Primary Academy, we teach history as it fosters critical thinking, cultural awareness and an understanding of our collective past. By exploring historical narratives and significant events, the children are able to make sense of what is happening in the world today. Our aim is to bring history alive and make it fun. Many of our history topics involve either a school trip to museums, or we invite professional re-enactment companies into school, so we can immerse ourselves in the period being studied. Having the opportunity to see artefacts from the past, watch old video footage or look at photos allows the children to make a direct comparison between their own lives and those from the past. The gory, nasty or slightly mad details may be the ones that capture their interest, but our aim is to inspire our children to become lifelong lovers of history.
What are we learning about in History?
In EYFS, children embark on their historical journey with topics that encourage personal connection and stimulate curiosity. They explore themes such as All About Me, where they reflect on their own lives, Life Cycles, which introduces the concept of change over time, and the fascinating world of Dinosaurs, igniting imagination and wonder about the prehistoric era.
As pupils transition to Key Stage 1, they delve into pivotal moments and figures in British history. Topics include the Royal Family, an exploration of monarchy and tradition; The Great Fire of London, which examines urban change and resilience; and Nurses, recognising their invaluable contributions during historical crises. Children will also learn about The Gunpowder Plot, Significant Explorers, and Significant Women in History, broadening their understanding of exploration and the roles women have played in shaping our society.
In Key Stage 2, the curriculum deepens as students engage with more complex historical periods and themes. Participants will examine The Romans, Ancient Egypt, the Civil Rights Movement, and World War II, providing insight into the foundations of modern society. Furthermore, they will investigate Ancient Greece, The Space Race, and The Mayans, fostering a comprehensive understanding of global history.
Through this curriculum, we aim to instil a sense of identity and responsibility, enabling future generations to learn from the past while progressing towards a more informed future.
