Geography at Forres Primary Academy
Why we teach geography?
At Forres Primary Academy, we teach geography to inspire pupils to be curious and fascinated about the world and its people. Within our Geography lessons we will explore physical and human features of the earth and the processes, systems and interrelations that create and influence them. By the end of our journey at Forres, children develop knowledge and skills that are vital to their future as informed citizens.
What are we learning about in Geography?
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) lays the foundation for geographical understanding throughout their journey. Children are introduced to their local area, where they learn to identify significant landmarks and understand their immediate environment. This exploration encourages them to use simple maps, igniting an interest in navigation and spatial awareness. The relationship between animals and their habitats is another key theme, enabling young learners to recognise the diversity of life and the importance of ecosystems. Engaging with these concepts in EYFS fosters an early appreciation of geography's relevance and their role in the world.
As students progress to Key Stage 1 (KS1), the curriculum expands upon their foundational knowledge. Children will explore their local area and the broader context of the United Kingdom, gaining insights into the surrounding seas. The curriculum introduces biomes around the world, allowing young learners to compare and contrast diverse ecosystems. Furthermore, map work provides a deeper understanding of their local geography alongside an examination of Brazil, oceans, and continents, thereby broadening their geographical perspective.
In Key Stage 2 (KS2), geography education becomes increasingly complex and enriching. Pupils will study impressive regions such as Scandinavia, learning about the unique geographical features and cultures found there. The curriculum also includes an exploration of UK rivers, Russia, and the majestic national parks which showcase natural beauty and biodiversity. Critical topics such as the Galápagos Islands and natural disasters are integrated, prompting discussions on conservation and global challenges. Additionally, students will investigate Central America and Mexico, culminating in a well-rounded understanding of the intricate tapestry of our world.
Through this comprehensive geography curriculum, we strive to instil a sense of curiosity about the world and inspire learners to become engaged global citizens.
