At Forres School reading is given a high priority. In Early Years our children follow the Phonic's Bug, Alphablocks and Rigby Stars Reading Schemes. In KS1 Children use Rigby Stars reading scheme supplemented with Oxford Reading Tree. In KS2 pupils continue with these schemes and then move to a range of reading material which is colour banded according to Hertfordshire County Council reading levels.
All phonics teaching at our school follows the Letters and Sounds Programme, once Phase 6 phonics is completed children follow Support for Spelling Strategy.
At Forres, we are passionate about reading and would love the children to experience as wide a range of literature as possible. Here are some suggestions for books that are suitable for your child’s year group. How many has your child read? Children may enjoy listening to you reading to them or could listen to an audio book, especially if they are not ready to read it independently:
At Forres Primary School, synthetic phonics is taught as the main approach to early reading. We use a teaching scheme called ‘Letters and Sounds’ to teach phonics. This scheme is split into 6 phases which are taught across Reception and KS1.
In phonic sessions children are taught to recognise letters, understand the sound they make and then blend them together to create words. Children are encouraged to use their knowledge of the letter sounds to blend and sound out words. For example, they will learn to blend the sounds s-a-t to make the word sat. They will also start learning to segment words. For example, they might be asked to find the letter sounds that make the word tap. Some words, which cannot be phonetically sounded out, are taught at each phase. These are ‘tricky words’ and are taught through sight recognition.
The National phonics screening check is a statutory assessment that was introduced in 2012 to all Year 1 pupils. This check is used to assess your child's phonics skills and knowledge learnt and retained through Reception and Year 1 (phases 3, 4 and 5).
