Children take part in daily Guided Reading sessions in which they focus on developing both their reading and comprehension skills.
In Early Years our children follow the Phonic's Bug, Alphablocks and Rigby Stars Reading Schemes. In KS1 Children use Rigby Stars reading scheme supplemented with Oxford Reading Tree.
Accelerated Reader is used within KS2. Children will take a STAR reading test which assesses their reading level. They will then choose books within this level to read, once they have finished their book they will take a quiz in order to assess their understanding of the text.
Reading Eggs is an interactive programme which is also used to supplement the development of children's reading skills.
In order to support your child's reading development, we expect children to be reading at least 3 times a week at home and for this to be signed in the child's reading record.
Phonics and Spelling.
At Forres Primary School, synthetic phonics is taught as the main approach to early reading. We use a teaching scheme called ‘Letters and Sounds’ to teach phonics. This scheme is split into 6 phases which are taught across EYFS and KS1.
In phonic sessions children are taught to recognise letters, understand the sound they make and then blend them together to create words. Children are encouraged to use their knowledge of the letter sounds to blend and sound out words. For example, they will learn to blend the sounds s-a-t to make the word sat. They will also start learning to segment words. For example, they might be asked to find the letter sounds that make the word tap. Some words, which cannot be phonetically sounded out, are taught at each phase. These are ‘tricky words’ and are taught through sight recognition.
Children take part in the Year 1 Phonics screening at the end of Year 1 which assesses their phonic knowledge from EYFS and Year 1.

From Year 2 children take part in regular spelling sessions which follow the 'No Nonsense Spelling' scheme. These sessions provide children with a range of strategies to support them with spelling. Children will have spellings sent home every Friday with their Learning Log which will then be tested the following week.
At Forres, we are passionate about reading and would love the children to experience as wide a range of literature as possible. Here are some suggestions for books that are suitable for your child’s year group. How many has your child read? Children may enjoy listening to you reading to them or could listen to an audio book, especially if they are not ready to read it independently:
